How exactly is the at-home sleep apnea test performed?
One of the most important indicators in a sleep apnea study is the cessation of breathing for 10 or more seconds during sleep. These pauses (apneas) are often for longer and more frightening periods than 10 seconds.
In severe forms of apnea, they can even last for over a minute—a full minute during which the body is not actually breathing, and no oxygen reaches the brain.
The presence or absence of this symptom is determined using a nasal cannula placed in the user's nostrils, which measures the airflow to the lungs.
To accurately determine the type of apnea (whether obstructive or central), the device measures chest movements with the help of the belt.
